MANCHESTER, England, April 29 (Reuters) - A stunning goal from Paul Scholes gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday to set up an all-English Champions League final against either Liverpool or Chelsea in Moscow next month.
Scholes sent a swerving shot high and wide of goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the 14th minute of the semi-final, second leg at Old Trafford to give United a 1-0 aggregate victory.
“(He’s) one of our great players. He came through the ranks and he knows about this club. I’m so pleased for everyone,” United manager Alex Ferguson told ITV television.
“It was marvellous, this club deserves to be in the final, for the history and the support. Fantastic.”
Barcelona, and especially their Argentine winger Lionel Messi, played some outstanding attacking football but were thwarted time and again by brilliant defending from United’s back line.
“They had to gamble and the fans got us over the line,” Ferguson said.
It will be United’s third European Cup final following their earlier successes in 1968 and 1999.
ALOR STAR: While the rest of the country is grappling with the Super League match-fixing problem, it was all nice and dandy at the Darulaman Stadium last night as Kedah let their hair down to celebrate their league success.
The 25,000-strong home crowd lent their vocal support as the Canaries downed Pahang 1-0 in their final home match of the season, courtesy of a 10-minute Marlon James goal.
But the fans reserved their loudest cheers for after the match, when Kedah received the Super League trophy from Sultan Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
Mohd Azraai Khor’s team, who had already created history by bagging an unprecedented treble last year, are also the first side to successfully defend the Super League trophy. They secured the title with four matches to spare earlier this month.
Stand-in skipper Bernard Huggins, deputising for the injured A. Victor, led his team-mates to receive the Super League trophy and winners’ medals.
The Kedah players then went on a victory lap to parade the trophy around the stadium.
In the match, which served as a prelude to the two-legged FA Cup semi-final between the two sides in June, the champions took the match seriously by parading their best eleven.
There was only 40 seconds on the clock when the league’s top scorer James got a free header from a Nelson Martin corner but failed to get on target.
The St Vincent and Grenadines striker was not to be denied his 23rd league goal in the 10th minute. Off a quick counter attack that began from the Kedah goalmouth, James met a Khyril Muhymeen floater with a deft flick to beat Mohd Syamsuri Mustafa in the Pahang goal.
At the other end, Hairuddin Omar could have snatched a late equaliser for Pahang.
But just after rounding Kedah goalkeeper Mohd Helmi Eliza, the former national striker lost his balance and shot wildly.
LONDON: Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-1 in a dramatic match at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to pull level at the top of the Premier League and keep alive their hopes of snatching the title from United's grasp.
Michael Ballack was Chelsea's scoring hero, deciding the game with an 86th-minute penalty after heading the home side ahead at the end of the first half.
The Chelsea players celebrated that goal by unfolding a number eight shirt with “Pat Lampard RIP” on the back following the death of midfielder Frank Lampard's mother on Thursday. He was given compassionate leave by the club and missed the game.
Wayne Rooney equalised for the visitors when his 56th-minute shot went in off the post after a careless backpass from Ricardo Carvalho.
With two matches to play both teams have 81 points, although United remain top because of a better goal difference.
Despite the defeat United will still win the title if they match the same number of points that Chelsea collect from their last two games at Newcastle United and at home against Bolton Wanderers.
United's last two league games are at home to West Ham United and away at Wigan Athletic.
Ballack's late winner came after Michael Carrick was judged to have handled a cross from Michael Essien just minutes after Wes Brown appeared to have also handled in the area.
Chelsea's appeals for that infringement were waved away by referee Alan Wiley, but he pointed to the spot after Carrick handled and Ballack kept his nerve to send goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar the wrong way.

Anak kecil main api
Terbakar hatinya yang sepi
Airmata darah bercampur keringat
Bumi dipijak milik orang
Nenek moyang kaya raya
Tergadai seluruh harta benda
Akibat sengketa sesamalah kita
Cita lenyap di arus zaman
Indahnya bumi kita ini
Warisan berkurun lamanya
Hasil mengalir ke tangan yang lain
Pribumi merintih sendiri
Masa depan sungguh kelam
Kan lenyap peristiwa semalam
Tertutuplah hati terkunci mati
Maruah peribadi dah hilang
Kini kita cuma tinggal kuasa
Yang akan menentukan bangsa
Bersatulah hati bersama berbakti
Pulih kembali harga diri
Kita sudah tiada masa
Majulah dengan gagah perkasa
Janganlah terlalai teruskan usaha
Melayu kan gagah di Nusantara (3x)
HONG KONG - South China's hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the AFC Cup were dealt a severe blow on Wednesday as they were beaten 3-1 at home to Malaysian Super League champions Kedah.
Baddrol Bakhtiar put the visitors ahead in the 30th minute before Cris equalised just before the hour mark, but Marlon James restored Kedah's lead in the 65th minute and substitute Samransak Kram made the points safe with five minutes remaining.
The result leaves South China with just one point from three games in Group D while Kedah have six.
Both sides are able to boast strikers that are prolific in their respective domestic leagues with South China's Detinho on 16 so far while Kedah's James has weighed in with an impressive 21 goals.
And it was the latter who had a hand in the first opportunity of the game when in the seventh minute he was fouled just outside the box and Nelson San Martin curled the resulting free-kick round the wall that Zhang Chunhui did well to punch to safety.
Three minutes later and the hosts had a chance of their own to open the scoring when the Kedah defence failed to clear and the ball fell kindly for skipper Man Pei Tak who was free on the edge of the area but contrived to send his shot wide of the post.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead on the half hour mark when James picked up the ball down the left flank, brushed off the attention of two defenders to cut inside the box and his ball across goal eventually fell for the unmarked Bakhtiar to lash home from close-range.
Six minutes later South China had a golden opportunity to draw level when Tales Shutz sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal but Detinho's outstretched boot was unable to make the crucial connection.
And seconds before the break Yip Chi Ho broke free down the left and drilled an effort on goal that Elias could only push back into the danger zone and Shutz's follow-up was cleared off the line.
South China came out strong in the second half but were struggling to produce anything telling in the final third with Shutz twice driving wide when in a promising position.
But their pressure eventually told as South China drew level just before the hour mark when Brazilian defender Cris headed home from a corner.
However, the hosts' joy was short-lived when Kedah restored their lead in the 65th minute.
A mistake from Deng Jinghwang allowed San Martin to pick up the ball down the right flank and the midfielder made his way to the by-line before whipping a low cross into the box and James stabbed home from close range.
Substitute Kram wasted an opportunity to add a third with 12 minutes remaining when he was put through on goal but contrived to send his shot just wide of the post.
However, Kram was not to be denied in the 85th minute when he latched onto a cross in the box before lashing home from close range.
